WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MAKATON & BSL SIGNING?
Makaton is a Language Programme that provides signs, symbols and speech as a means of communication and to encourage the development of language and literacy skills. It is not a Sign Language.
Makaton recognizes and respects the natural sign languages of Deaf people and in particular British Sign Language (BSL) in this country.
It is a simplified version of sign language that was developed specifically for communication with and between people with learning disorders. It was originally based on British Sign Language, but has been adapted to the local sign language in various parts of the world.
Makaton came about after a research project identified the words that we all use most frequently and need in everyday conversation. Then signs from British Sign Language, used by the deaf community in this country, were matched to these words, so that as you speak you sign and speak at the same time.
The most significant difference is that Makaton is a simplified, or cut down, version. The signs used are easy for little hands to mimic as opposed to some of the more difficult signs you would find in BSL.
Makaton is widely used by Early Years Practitioners - childminders, nurseries, schools and other professionals such as Speech and Language Therapists.
Makaton signing for babies is a fun and easy way to learn to sign with your baby. It is easy to learn anybody can do it and here at BaaBaa Babies we focus on helping you to learn useful everyday signs. Our classes are designed to show you how to sign in a fun and relaxed way.
